Once upon a time, not so very long ago, I was wandering around an antiques fair. The day was long and meandering, and as I perused the various stalls, searching for some special little treasure, I noticed a children's book in a box under a stall. I crouched down and picked it up. The pages were foxed, the spine was split, and the cover was almost falling apart; it clearly was (or was once, a long time ago...) a well-loved book. As I looked through the pages one by one, the sticky expectant thumb prints of the previous owner still visible on each page, I slowly became drawn into a curious world - a world of sullen little girls with slender limbs, exquisitely dressed, who, like me, were all poised on the brink of some kind of discovery...
